The San Francisco Bay Area is the second-largest metropolitan area in California after Los Angeles. It has a population of over 7 million people and covers an area of 4,852 square miles (12,933km²). It was named the sixth-most populous city in the United States by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2010.

The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge that crosses the entrance to San Francisco Bay from the western edge of the East Bay to Yerba Buena Island. At 1.7 miles (2.8 km) long, its deck is 75 feet (23 m) above the water surface at its highest point.
Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary was a federal prison located on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay, California. The site opened in 1934 and closed in 1963. In 1969, it reopened as a maximum-security penitentiary under contract with the U.S. government, where it remained until 1987. Alcatraz Island was first settled around 300 A.D., back then it was named Occidental. With time, the name got changed to Isla de la Paz (Peace Insecurity maximums land). Later in 1858, the name was changed again to Alcatraz. Alcatraz has been used for military prisons since the late 1800s. In 1962, the prison was declared unfit for human habitation and became closed to the public. After the closure of the prison, the island became home to many wildlife species including seabirds and various water birds.
City Hall is the seat of local government for the city of San Francisco, California, and houses offices for several agencies including the Mayor of San Francisco, the Chief Administrative Officer, and various departments. It is located at 100 Van Ness Avenue, between Market Street and Civic Center Plaza. The current building opened in 1966 and replaced the previous City Hall, built 1858-1862.
