Golden Gate Bridge
It's a suspension bridge across San Francisco Bay between Marin County and San Mateo County. This was the first major steel arch bridge built after the Great Depression. It was designed by Joseph Strauss and opened to traffic in 1937. It was built for $25 million. It has a main span length of 1,595 feet (482 m). Its towers are 605 feet (185 m) high. It is currently owned and operated by the California Department of Transportation.

Design
The Golden Gate Bridge was designed by William Lee Benson and John C. Hudson. Construction began in 1933 and the bridge was opened on May 27, 1937. The primary structure consists of two parallel cantilever trusses carrying road decking and railings. The towers are supported by four sets of cables, each set composed of three wires. The total length of the bridge is approximately 7.7 miles (12.5 km).
Geometry
The Golden Gate Bridge has a main span of 4,200 feet (1,250 m), making it the longest single-span suspension bridge in the world. The width of the roadway varies from 36 to 42 feet (11–13 m), depending upon the direction being traversed. There are five lanes in each direction, with two lanes reserved for pedestrians and bicycles.
History of the Golden Gate Bridge
In 1868, the first plans were drawn up to build a railroad bridge across the Golden Gate strait. However, this plan was rejected due to its high cost and lack of funds. In 1887, the first design of a road-rail bridge was proposed. This bridge consisted of a railroad track suspended over the waterway. This bridge was never built and no further designs were created until 1912. In 1913, the second design of the Golden Gate Bridge was completed. This design was a suspension bridge similar to the Brooklyn Bridge. However, this design was not accepted either.
Construction began in 1933 under the supervision of chief engineer Joseph Strauss. At the time, the project was called the Bay Bridge. The construction site was at Fort Point, near downtown San Francisco. The bridge took almost ten years to complete. The total cost of the bridge was $35 million ($400 million today).
Construction Time
Construction began on March 17, 1937, and was completed on September 25, 1937. It took eight years to build and cost $ 35 million.
Its official name is the Golden Gate International Exposition Memorial Highway Bridge; however, it is more commonly referred to as the Golden Gate Bridge. Its longest span is 1,149 feet (350 m) from end to end, making it the fifth-longest suspension bridge in the world. At the time of its completion, it was the highest manmade structure in the world at 605 feet (181 m).
