The city of Sedona, located in Central Arizona, was founded in 1881 due to the discovery of large deposits of red rock. This amazing landscape of towering monoliths, deep valleys, and narrow winding roads has been attracting visitors ever since. With over 300 days of sunshine each year and average temperatures that exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit, Sedona offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, fishing, golfing, horseback riding, and even yoga.
Population: According to 2010 census estimates, Sedona has approximately 20,000 residents.
Climate: Sedona’s climate is classified as the Mediterranean, with mild summers and cool winters. This means that the average temperature ranges between 57°F and 68°F (14°C – 20°C). Average precipitation is around 25 inches annually (about 643 millimeters), falling mainly in the summer month.
Vegetation: Sedona lies in the Chuska Mountain Range. These mountains contain many forests, grasslands, and other types of vegetation. Some of these include ponderosa pine, juniper, oak trees, yucca, and mesquite.
Geology: Sedona gets its name from the red sandstone rock that forms much of the area. Many different layers of sedimentary rock have been deposited over millions of years in this region.
Sedona is located just north of Phoenix, AZ, at 2,600 feet above sea level. According to the 2010 census, there are about 20,000 people that live there. In the summertime, temperatures can get as high as 120 degrees Fahrenheit. There are many different types of wildlife that call Sedona home. Some of those animals include rabbits, squirrels, lizards, snakes, chipmunks, birds, bats, butterflies, and deer. Of course, many different types of trees make up the forest. These trees consist of pine, cedar, oak, juniper, holly, ash, maple, elm, sycamore, and birch. many different kinds of grasses grow in Sedona.
Some common ones include blue grama, wheatgrass, buffalo grass, sweet clover, Bermuda grass, St. Augustine, and rye. Sedona was named after the Indian village of Hohokam once located on its site.
Located at the base of Red Rock Mountain, the community was built in the 1960s to provide housing and work opportunities for those who were displaced from other towns due to the construction of the nearby Fort Apache military reservation. Today, Sedona attracts visitors from around the world due to its rich history and stunning beauty. The town is located about two hours northwest of Phoenix and three hours southeast of Flagstaff. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city had a population of 26,942 in 2010. Sedona is located at the base of the red rock mountains in southeastern Arizona. Sedona has been designated a National Natural Landmark District by the National Park Service. There are many different types of rock formations including but not limited to Basalt, Kaolinite, Quartzite, Sandstone, and Shale. The town was founded in 1882.
